Ogier Wins Rally Islas Canarias as Solberg’s Challenge Ends in Heartbreak
Nine-time world champion Sébastien Ogier delivered a composed and calculated drive to secure his first win of the 2026 FIA World Rally Championship season at Rally Islas Canarias, following a dramatic final day that saw rising star Oliver Solberg crash out of contention.
The Frenchman, alongside co-driver Vincent Landais, finished 19.9 seconds ahead of Elfyn Evans and co-driver Scott Martin, while Sami Pajari completed an all-Toyota Gazoo Racing podium on the demanding asphalt roads of Gran Canaria.
Dramatic Final Day Decides Outcome
Sunday’s action promised a thrilling showdown between Ogier and Solberg, with the young Swede starting just 3.8 seconds behind. Solberg came out aggressively in tricky, foggy conditions, trimming the gap to only 2.2 seconds with two stages remaining.
However, the battle came to an abrupt end on the second pass of Ingenio – Valsequillo. Solberg misjudged a high-speed section and struck the barriers, forcing retirement. Fortunately, both he and co-driver Elliott Edmondson escaped unharmed.
Solberg later admitted he had been “too optimistic” in the changing conditions — a costly miscalculation in what had been one of his strongest performances in the WRC to date.
Ogier Keeps His Cool
While the ending lacked the wheel-to-wheel climax fans expected, Ogier’s consistency throughout the weekend proved decisive. The veteran driver maintained his rhythm under pressure and avoided mistakes on the fast, unforgiving stages.
Reflecting on the win, Ogier acknowledged the bittersweet nature of victory but praised the competition and his team’s performance. The triumph also adds another rally to his illustrious career and reinforces his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Toyota Dominance and Milestone Achievement
It was a landmark weekend for Toyota Gazoo Racing, which locked out the top four positions and celebrated its 300th podium finish in WRC history.
Behind Ogier, Evans capitalised on Solberg’s retirement to secure second place and maximum bonus points from the Power Stage and Super Sunday classifications. His performance moves him back to the top of the drivers’ championship standings.
Pajari continued his impressive consistency with a fourth consecutive podium, while Takamoto Katsuta finished fourth to complete Toyota’s clean sweep at the front.
The Rest of the Field
Adrien Fourmaux led the charge for Hyundai in fifth despite a late penalty, followed by Thierry Neuville and returning veteran Dani Sordo.
Further down the order, Josh McErlean delivered a clean performance for M-Sport Ford, while Yohan Rossel secured back-to-back WRC2 victories for Lancia.
Championship Standings Tighten
After five rounds, Evans leads the championship with 101 points, narrowly ahead of Katsuta on 99, while Pajari sits third with 72 points.
In the manufacturers’ standings, Toyota has built a commanding lead with 265 points — 98 clear of Hyundai — underlining its dominance in the early stages of the 2026 season.
What’s Next
The FIA World Rally Championship now heads to gravel for the next round, Vodafone Rally de Portugal, scheduled for 7–10 May. With momentum shifting and the title race tightening, the battle for 2026 supremacy is far from over.
