MXGP South Africa 2026 Returns to Africa

July 4 @ 9:00 am – July 5 @ 5:00 pm

After an 18-year absence, the MXGP South Africa 2026 is officially bringing the FIM Motocross World Championship back to African soil for what promises to be one of the biggest motorsport events on the continent. Taking place at the iconic Terra Topia Motocross Track in Johannesburg on 4–5 July 2026, the event signals a historic return for global motocross racing in South Africa.

The highly anticipated championship round will feature the world’s elite riders competing in the premier MXGP and MX2 classes across a purpose-built circuit designed to test speed, endurance, and technical precision. Fans can expect an action-packed weekend as factory teams, international media, and motocross enthusiasts from around the globe descend on Johannesburg for the landmark occasion.

Beyond the racing spectacle, MXGP South Africa 2026 is set to deliver a full-scale lifestyle and entertainment experience. Organisers are promising immersive fan zones, premium hospitality suites, live entertainment, curated food experiences, and major brand activations that will transform Terra Topia into a vibrant motorsport festival.

The return of MXGP to South Africa is especially significant for local stars Camden Mc Lellan and Calvin Vlaanderen, who will finally have the opportunity to compete in a home Grand Prix in front of passionate local supporters for the first time in their careers.

South Africa has a rich history with the Motocross World Championship. The country first hosted a 250cc Grand Prix in 1985 at Corobrik Park near Johannesburg, where Jacky Vimond claimed victory. The championship later returned to Sun City between 2004 and 2006, producing memorable wins from motocross legends including Stefan Everts, Antonio Cairoli, Josh Coppins, and Mickael Pichon.

The last MXGP event on South African soil took place in 2008 in Nelspruit, where Jonathan Barragan and Tommy Searle emerged victorious in the MX1 and MX2 categories respectively. Now, nearly two decades later, the championship’s return marks a major milestone for African motorsport and re-establishes South Africa as a key destination on the international motocross calendar.

With millions of viewers expected worldwide, MXGP South Africa 2026 is poised to showcase not only elite racing talent but also South Africa’s culture, energy, and passion for motorsport on a global stage.

Tickets for the event are officially on sale, giving fans the opportunity to secure their place at one of the most anticipated motorsport weekends of 2026. Organisers are encouraging fans to act quickly as demand is expected to be high for the historic return.

More than just a race weekend, MXGP South Africa 2026 represents the return of a continent to the world stage — a celebration of legacy, progression, and the future of motocross in Africa.
