SUMMARY:2024 FIA World Rally Championship: Vodafone Rally de Portugal
DESCRIPTION:About the rally \nA founding round of the WRC back in 1973\, Rally de Portugal is ranked as one of the WRC’s classic events with challenging gravel stages to the east and south of Porto. \nVarying road surfaces and changeable weather add to the task facing crews. It’s also extremely popular among fans with enthusiastic spectators following the action in their tens of thousands. \nSandy roads ensure grip is at a premium for the early starters during the first pass through the stages and the surface can degrade to unearth sharp rocks and deep ruts for the second pass. This often requires teams to raise the ride height on their cars to avoid mechanical damage. \nOver the years\, the rally has received numerous awards\, including ‘The Best Rally in the World’ (which it has won five times) and ‘The Most Improved Rally of the Year’ in 2000. Finland’s Markku Alén and France’s Sébastien Ogier top the roll of honour with five wins apiece. \nTop 3 Highlights \n\nThe legendary Fafe jump before the finish or the hillsides overlooking the sweeping bends that precede it are a magnet for fans. Unmissable.\n\n\nThursday evening’s opening ceremony in Coimbra. An opportunity to see the drivers\, grab an autograph and snatch a selfie before the action kicks off.\n\n\nExploring Porto. A maze of beautiful streets converge on the mighty Douro river\, crossed by the iconic metal arch bridge and lined by port houses.\n\n\nServicepark \n\nBased at the Exponor exhibition centre in Matosinhos – the largest in Portugal. Plenty of room outdoors for the manufacturer teams\, with smaller service bays accommodated inside.\n\nEvent History \n\nFirst held in 1967 and one of the founding events in the inaugural 1973 WRC.\n\n\nInitially a mixed surface rally\, it switched to a pure gravel format but lost its place in the calendar after bad weather ruined the 2001 event.\n\n\nOrganisers moved from the north to the Algarve holiday region in the south and it regained its place in 2007.\n\n\nMoved back to the north in 2015.\n\n\nNamed ‘Best Rally in the World’ on five occasions.

SUMMARY:2024 FIA World Rally Championship: Rally Italia Sardegna
DESCRIPTION:About the rally \nOne of the founding rounds from the championship’s beginning in 1973\, Italy’s WRC counter was formerly a mixed surface event based in Sanremo before it moved to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia in 2004. \nFast but narrow stages lined with bushes\, trees or rocks on the edge leave no room for error\, while the hard-base roads are covered by a sandy surface which is swept away during the first pass to leave rougher and rutted conditions for the second run. \nAdding to the challenge are the temperatures\, which can exceed 30°C. It will be uncomfortable in the cars with higher-than-normal stress on engines and transmissions. \nSébastiens Loeb and Ogier top the roll of honour and have won the event four times in its current format (since it moved to Sardinia in 2004). \nTop 3 Highlights \n\nThe Monte Lerno stage\, which runs twice on Friday. This year it has been extended to a whopping 49.92 kilometres in length!\nMicky’s Jump – one of the WRC’s iconic locations – also features in the Monte Lerno test. Cars fly high and long as the road literally drops away beneath them.\nThe podium ceremony in Olbia on Sunday afternoon. After the trophies and anthems are done\, it is traditional for the winning team to dive en masse into the harbour to cool off.\n\n\nServicepark \n\nThe hub is located at the picturesque seafront of Molo Brin\, Olbia\, in the east.\n\nEvent History \n\nItaly’s WRC counter was formerly a mixed surface event based in Sanremo\, and known as the Rally of the Flowers when it was first held in 1928.\n\n\nIt formed part of the WRC from the championship’s beginning in 1973.\n\n\nMichèle Mouton became the first and only woman to win a WRC round when she triumphed in 1981.\n\n\nThe rally moved to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia in 2004.
