After weeks of intense building, the moment of truth has arrived at DarkFest — testing day. Known as the scariest day of the year, the first hits mark the official transition from build site to full-send freeride playground.
In Stellenbosch, Sam Reynolds leads the charge, dropping in alongside close friend Theo Erlangsen as the crew begins ticking off features one by one.
The Scariest Day of the Year
With minimal warm-up and brand-new bikes, riders face the daunting challenge of hitting some of the biggest jumps in the world. From the first roll-ins to the towering Rocket Launcher features, every run is a mix of nerves, precision and trust in the build.
Despite the pressure, the relief is instant once wheels touch down smoothly. What starts as hesitation quickly turns into confidence as the course proves itself — fast, flowy and built to handle massive airtime.
From Step-Ups to Full Runs
The session begins with smaller features before progressing to the bigger jumps. Step-ups and early features help riders dial in speed and timing, but it’s the bigger hits that define the day.
As confidence builds, riders begin linking sections, eventually pushing toward full top-to-bottom runs. Each successful hit confirms what the builders hoped for — the course works, and it’s ready to go big.
Quarter Pipe and Big Air Progression
The newly upgraded Mega Quarter also gets its first test runs, with riders noting the steeper take-off and landing as a major improvement. Designed for bigger airs and smoother landings, the feature is already showing its potential to deliver standout moments.
Meanwhile, the massive 90-foot jumps and step-downs are being unlocked, setting the stage for even bigger sends in the days ahead.
Eyes on the Falcon Heavy
While most of the course is now ride-ready, anticipation is building around the nearly completed Falcon Heavy jump. Positioned next to the Rocket Launcher, the feature promises next-level airtime — and all eyes are on who will be the first to hit it.
Full Send Mode Incoming
With the course now ridden from top to bottom, DARKFEST 2026 is officially underway. Riders are arriving, confidence is growing, and the progression is just getting started.
If first hits are anything to go by, this year’s event is set to deliver some of the biggest and most spectacular moments in freeride mountain biking.
