Johannesburg Calls You Home with Main Street Sundays

July 21 All day

Why Johannesburg is Calling You Back to Its Heart

Johannesburg has never been a city that plays small. It is a place of gold and grit, towering skylines and deep-rooted soul—a city built on resilience, reinvention, and remarkable people. On 21 July, the city is extending an invitation that feels both simple and profound: come back to its streets.

Main Street Sundays returns to the Johannesburg CBD as more than just an event. It is a celebration of community and culture, transforming Main Street into a car-free playground where people, not traffic, take centre stage. It is an opportunity for Joburg residents and visitors alike to reconnect with the city that has shaped countless stories and dreams.

Rediscovering the Soul of Jozi

Around the world, cities that have reclaimed their streets for people have witnessed extraordinary transformations. Pedestrian-friendly spaces have increased foot traffic, supported local businesses, and fostered stronger community connections. More importantly, they have reminded residents why they fell in love with their cities in the first place.

For Johannesburg, Main Street Sundays represents that same possibility. By opening the streets to families, artists, cyclists, skaters, and entrepreneurs, the event creates an environment where civic pride and human connection can flourish.

Dawn Robertson, Visitor & Creative Economy Catalyst at Jozi My Jozi, believes the event is about restoring the city’s soul.

“Main Street Sundays is about restoring Johannesburg’s soul. When we close the streets to cars and open them to community, we remind people that this city is theirs. It always has been.”

She emphasises that the day has been designed to be safe and welcoming for everyone. Families can walk freely, children can play without worry, and visitors can explore the city with confidence and curiosity.

A Street Alive with Creativity

On 21 July, Main Street will become a living canvas of experiences.

Dedicated lanes will allow cyclists, roller-skaters, and skateboarders to move freely through the city. Children can enjoy interactive play areas developed with Play Africa, while art lovers can explore a walkable art mile beginning near the Standard Bank Gallery.

For those seeking slower moments, silent book clubs, outdoor yoga sessions, acoustic performances, and wellness activities offer opportunities to unwind and connect. Meanwhile, local restaurants and craft vendors will showcase the very best of Johannesburg’s culinary and creative talent.

Celebrating Johannesburg’s Street Culture

Few brands embody the spirit of Johannesburg’s streets quite like Crispy Skateboards. Born and raised in Jozi, the brand has become synonymous with creativity, authenticity, and urban expression.

At Main Street Sundays, Crispy Skateboards and BOS Iced Tea will create an exciting activation featuring a skate stand complete with a grind box and kicker, inviting skaters of all ages and skill levels to embrace the city’s energy.

“Every crack in the pavement, every kerb, every rail—that is our studio, our gallery, our home. We are here to feel the city breathe.”

says Kaelik Dullaart, CEO of Crispy Skateboards

A Proudly South African Celebration

Adding to the atmosphere will be BOS Iced Tea, one of South Africa‘s most loved beverage brands. Made from rooibos harvested in the Cederberg, BOS represents the country’s rich natural heritage and diverse culture.

For BOS CEO Will Battersby, Main Street Sundays is about celebrating what makes South Africa extraordinary.

“When we are part of something like Main Street Sundays, we are saying: this country is extraordinary, these people are extraordinary, and we are honoured to be part of the story they are telling together.”

Answering the City’s Call

On 21 July, Main Street will echo with laughter, music, and movement. Children will run where cars once waited in traffic. Skaters will glide across the tarmac. Families will gather, strangers will become neighbours, and Johannesburg will once again remind everyone why it remains one of Africa’s most dynamic cities.

Main Street Sundays is not asking people merely to attend an event. It is inviting them to participate in something deeper—a shared sense of belonging and citizenship.

Johannesburg has always been a city of extraordinary possibility. For one golden Sunday, it invites everyone to return to its heart, look up at its buildings, feel the winter sun on their faces, and remember something important:

This city is yours. And it is calling you home.

Main Street Sundays takes place on 21 July in the Johannesburg CBD. Bring your family, your curiosity, and your love for the city.
