Last week, the picturesque island of Rodrigues in Mauritius played host to its first-ever Motorsport Festival, and who better to lead the charge than 11-time South African National Champion, Brian Capper. Known for his relentless determination and humility, Capper brought his electrifying presence and world-class skills to the event, leaving a lasting impression on both fans and competitors.
Reflecting on the festival, Capper shared his excitement about the unique atmosphere Rodrigues offered.
“Rodrigues hasn’t had a motorsport festival like this before and so it was welcomed with massively open arms and very excited competitors, spectators and fans. There are only 40,000 people in Rodrigues, and it felt like all of them knew about it. We had the bikes on the back of our vehicles, which pulled a lot of attraction everywhere we went.”
he remarked
Thankfully the journey to Rodrigues didn’t come with too many challenges.
“We were fortunate enough to be able to ship our bikes from Mauritius across to Rodrigues. The main challenge was the fear of the unknown. We didn’t know what spectators would do, especially when you’ve got 10,000 excited people. Thankfully, it was really well controlled.”
Capper explained
The second day of the three-day event came to an end with a spectacular fireworks display, which, despite the excitement, went off without any incidents.
“It was super exciting,”.
Capper added
Capper’s interaction with the local motorsport community was a highlight of the festival.
“The interaction with the local motorsport community was fantastic. They have so much passion, it was unbelievable to see. They loved riding with us, being involved, and enjoyed watching us. They haven’t seen what we do live, so to witness it first-hand gave them a lot of encouragement and hope.”
he said
Despite the unique conditions in Rodrigues, Capper maintained that the technical adjustments were minimal.
“Everything was pretty standard. The only slight adjustment was the ridge ride on the cliff, which was quite a bit higher than sea level. It was more a mental adjustment than changing the machinery. It was incredibly windy and challenging, but all-in-all, a great success.”
he noted
Brian Capper‘s participation in the Rodrigues Motorsport Festival was not just a display of exceptional talent, but also a testament to the unifying power of motorsport. As Rodrigues looks forward to more such events, Capper’s presence has set a high standard for what’s to come.
