Jason Webb has embarked on a deep dive into his Roush-supercharged Coyote engine, stripping it down piece by piece to uncover what went wrong. After removing the engine in a previous video, this latest installment, focuses on the detailed disassembly process, as he searches for clues about the engine’s failure.

With the Coyote securely mounted on the engine stand, Webb methodically begins removing components, ensuring everything is labeled and organized. Early in the teardown, he notices a missing eight-millimeter socket—likely his father’s—alongside a significant amount of debris, a telltale sign of the engine’s hard life in a drift car. As he progresses, he meticulously follows ProDemand’s step-by-step guide, ensuring he doesn’t miss any crucial steps.

The real damage becomes apparent once the heads are removed. A large chunk is missing from one of the pistons, leaving Webb stunned at how the engine was still running. Despite the failure, the cylinder bores appear to be in decent condition, giving him hope that the block can be salvaged. Further inspection of the bearings and oil filters reveals minimal wear, reinforcing the legendary durability of Ford’s Coyote platform.

Now facing a critical decision, Webb weighs his options: replace the damaged piston, upgrade to a full set of forged pistons and rods, buy a new Ford short block, or source a second-hand Coyote engine. After some deliberation, he decides to rebuild with a set of Mahle forged pistons while retaining the stock rods. He also plans to upgrade the head studs to ARP units and replace the torque-to-yield main cap bolts for added durability.

With a clear path forward, the next step is to complete the teardown, clean the block, and prepare for reassembly. Though the rebuild process is just beginning, Webb’s meticulous approach and passion for performance suggest that his Roush-supercharged Coyote will soon be back in action, stronger than ever.
