Local Legends: Racing Beyond the Track

Local Legends Don’t Just Race — They Build the Road for Others

In a sport where speed meets precision and passion fuels every lap, two young South African racers are carving their own path in the high-octane world of motorsport. Nathi Msimanga and Simphiwe Mohlahlo are more than drivers—they are Driven to Be Legendary, living proof that determination and resilience can turn dreams into reality.

Nathi Msimanga

For Nathi, the love for racing started with a Hot Wheels car and the roar of an imaginary engine. By 2016, that thrill had transformed into a real pursuit. Introduced to motorsport by his father, Nathi quickly realised that racing was more than just competition.

“It wasn’t just about racing cars, it was about the challenge, the drive to turn something I love into a real career, even when most people don’t understand why I’m chasing this dream,”.

he shares

Breaking into motorsport wasn’t simple.

“The path to becoming a racer wasn’t easy. There’s little information about costs, requirements, or career opportunities for aspiring local racers. I was lucky my dad had a network that helped me get started,”.

Nathi explains

His journey continues to fuel his ambition to climb the leaderboard while inspiring others to do the same.

Simphiwe Mohlahlo’s journey came later but with just as much determination.

“I started attending events in 2023, just soaking it all in to understand what it takes to become a racer. Motorsport felt like a distant dream, especially as a woman. So I want to show girls of all ages that it’s possible to break through, no matter how expensive or tough it seems.”

For Simphiwe, racing is about more than personal achievement.

“Every time I get into a racing car, I’m breaking barriers, creating awareness, and building a path for other women who want to follow. It’s about creating opportunities and reminding the next generation that the Hot Wheels car in their hands could be the start of a fulfilling journey.”

For both racers, being legendary transcends trophies or fame.

“It’s about creating something new from your own passion, not copying what others have done,”.

“Legends push beyond limits, break barriers, and overcome challenges, showing what dedication and talent truly mean.”

Simphiwe adds,

Their influence reaches beyond racetracks. By inspiring children across South Africa, they demonstrate that racing is not a distant fantasy—it’s achievable. It all starts with a Hot Wheels car, which can ignite a lifelong passion for speed and performance. Simphiwe encourages parents to support their children’s unique interests.

“My journey is different from most racers who start young, but I’m proof you can catch up and compete when you’re truly dedicated.”

Their favourite Hot Wheels cars also reflect their personalities: Nathi gravitates toward the Fast and Furious R34 GTR, while Simphiwe champions the bold Ford Mustang Dark Horse. More than toys, these cars symbolize ambition, speed, and dreams.

Simphiwe Mohlahlo

Together, Nathi Msimanga and Simphiwe Mohlahlo are turning their passion into a lasting legacy. Being Driven To Be Legendary is about passion, persistence, and courage—the kind that can start with a Hot Wheels Premium car and, eventually, lead to the dream of owning a supercar.
