Redemption Delivered: Hastings and Meier-Smith Conquer Brutal DH

2 Mins read

The Redemption DH at Crankworx 2026 lived up to its name in spectacular fashion, delivering one of the most physically punishing and technically demanding race days the downhill circuit has seen. Set against blue skies at Christchurch Adventure Park, the finals tested grit, strength and pure race craft — and it was Jenna Hastings and Luke Meier-Smith who emerged victorious.

A Course Rebuilt for Battle

Heavy rainfall earlier in the week threatened to derail competition, but relentless work from trail builders ensured the course was race-ready. A rerouted alternate line through the top third introduced a slabby, rocky and brutally steep opening section that demanded absolute commitment from the first pedal stroke.

While technically “rideable,” the track was anything but forgiving.

The upper woods forced riders across exposed rock and off-camber slabs, while the lower “motorway” section turned into a dry, fast, leg-burning sprint. A persistent headwind added another layer of brutality, forcing riders to pedal relentlessly through the final third.

“It was savage. This was one of the hardest race runs I’ve ever done.”

said Finn Iles after his run

Jenna Hastings Untouchable Again

The Elite women’s race opened with Sian A’Hern setting the early benchmark, confidently occupying the hot seat while fending off strong contenders including Sacha Mills and Elite newcomer Kate Hastings.

It took fellow Elite first-season rider Eliana Hulsebosch to shake things up. Hulsebosch delivered a commanding performance, crossing the line more than 8.8 seconds ahead of A’Hern and announcing herself as a serious threat in the series.

Jenna Hastings

But the final word belonged to Hastings.

Last year’s winner and top qualifier, Hastings attacked the treacherous upper rock sections with precision before maintaining composure through the punishing sprint finish. She stopped the clock at 5:16.021 — the fastest time of the day — securing her third medal of the week after Gold in the AirDH and Silver in the Pump Track Challenge.

With the victory, Hastings moves into a commanding early lead in the Queen of Crankworx standings for the 2026 season.

Luke Meier-Smith Overpowers Global Field

The men’s final was a high-stakes clash between hometown heroes and international heavyweights.

Among them was reigning world-class star Loïc Bruni, who delivered a composed run but ultimately fell short of the podium. Iles briefly controlled the hot seat with a strong 4:30.942, showcasing the fitness needed for the brutal bottom sprint.

Feeding off the Christchurch crowd, defending champion Lachie Stevens-McNab surged into the lead, clocking 4:26.979 — nearly four seconds ahead of Iles and igniting the finish arena.

But last rider down, Meier-Smith, was untouchable.

Fastest through every split, the Australian showcased flawless execution through the technical top and unleashed everything in the final sprint. Stopping the clock at 4:23.888, he defended his Seeding position and took a major step toward the King of Crankworx crown.

With Hastings tightening her grip on the Queen of Crankworx race and Meier-Smith staking his claim for King, the 2026 Crankworx season has officially ignited — and if Christchurch was any indication, the battles ahead will only get fiercer.
