Sanchez Retains EFC Interim Title at EFC 136

3 Mins read

Adrian “Rayo” Sanchez has kept his grip on the EFC interim lightweight championship — and immediately found himself with a much bigger target on his back.

Sanchez stopped Bradley Swanepoel by first-round TKO at 4:39 in the main event of EFC 136, presented by World Sports Betting, delivering a decisive championship performance on Thursday night.

But the biggest moment may have come after the final exchange.

With the fight over, reigning EFC Lightweight Champion Martin van Staden entered the Hexagon and came face-to-face with Sanchez, creating an unmistakable preview of a potential championship unification showdown.

Sanchez Leaves No Doubt

Interim championship fights come with a unique pressure.

The belt represents the division’s temporary crown, but every challenger knows that the real prize is ultimately becoming undisputed champion.

Sanchez looked determined to make his claim count.

The decisive stoppage came just seconds before the end of the opening round, with strikes forcing the referee to intervene at 4:39.

For Swanepoel, it was a brutal conclusion to the main event. For Sanchez, it was exactly the kind of performance that strengthens an argument for a shot at the undisputed title.

A first-round finish in a championship fight sends a very different message from a narrow decision.

Sanchez not only retained the interim belt — he did it emphatically.

Van Staden Makes His Move

Then came the confrontation.

Van Staden, the reigning EFC lightweight champion, stepped into the Hexagon following Sanchez’s victory.

The visual was immediate: interim champion versus champion.

While the unification fight still needs to be made official, the post-fight face-off provided a clear direction for the division.

For Sanchez, the challenge is no longer simply about defending an interim championship. The next opportunity could be to eliminate the word “interim” altogether.

For Van Staden, Sanchez’s EFC 136 performance provides plenty of evidence that the eventual meeting will be more than a routine title defence.

It could be a collision between two fighters fighting for control of the lightweight division.

EFC 136 Delivers Across the Card

The main event was only one part of a busy night inside the Hexagon.

Sithembiso Hadebe secured a unanimous decision victory over Godfrey Mkhwanazi in the bantamweight division, while Adei Volker submitted Joel Tiffo with a guillotine choke at 1:18 of Round 2.

Coenie Lamprecht also produced an early finish, submitting Lecture Gumbi with a rear-naked choke at 2:27 of the opening round.

Nasiphi Vellem and Lucky Magekha went the distance in the featherweight division, with Vellem earning a unanimous decision.

Their contest was subsequently recognised as Fight of the Night.

Earlier on the card, Marino Cutendana submitted Rian Mario Dunn with a triangle choke, Story Mpia Embombe secured a third-round rear-naked choke against Siyanda Vilakazi, and Seth van Aswegen submitted Wallace Okosso with an armbar in Round 1.

Jeremie Tshibala defeated Christopher Matukane by unanimous decision, while Grant Farrow edged Alex Kapinga by split decision.

Denver Isaacs also earned a unanimous decision over Philani Ngqoyiya.

Bonus Winners Under the Spotlight

Sanchez’s explosive championship performance earned him a performance bonus, while Hadebe was also rewarded for his showing.

Vellem and Magekha collected Fight of the Night honours, while Farrow received an additional bonus following his split-decision victory.

The collection of finishes and competitive decisions underlined the depth across the EFC 136 card.

But ultimately, the spotlight belongs to Sanchez.

The Road to Unification

Sanchez has done his part.

He entered EFC 136 carrying an interim championship and left with the same belt, but with his profile significantly elevated after a first-round stoppage.

Now the division has a clear storyline.

Adrian Sanchez has the interim gold. Martin van Staden has the undisputed crown.

The next chapter could determine who walks away as the true king of the EFC lightweight division.

Before that showdown arrives, EFC moves to its next event.

EFC 137 is scheduled for Thursday, 10 September, where reigning bantamweight champion Faeez Jacobs moves up to face Chadrack Yemba for the interim featherweight championship.

But after EFC 136, attention will inevitably keep drifting back towards the lightweight division.

Sanchez has made his statement.

Van Staden has answered.

Now the Hexagon awaits the unification fight.
