The 2026 SMX World Championship has delivered plenty of twists, but few have carried the pressure now hanging over the Lawrence brothers.
At Budds Creek Motocross Park on August 22, Hunter Lawrence produced a commanding 1-1 sweep to reclaim the 450SMX championship lead. His reward? A one-point advantage over younger brother Jett heading into next weekend’s season finale.
After a summer of momentum swings, the championship has been reduced to its simplest equation: Hunter versus Jett, one race, one title.
And neither rider will have much room for error.

Hunter Lawrence Rises When Conditions Get Ugly
Budds Creek threw a curveball at the riders before the racing even settled into its rhythm.
Heavy morning rain transformed the track, creating wet, muddy conditions that demanded patience and precision. As the afternoon progressed, sunshine helped reshape the circuit into a much more competitive surface.
Hunter handled both versions of Budds Creek.

In Moto 1, Haiden Deegan grabbed the holeshot, but Hunter quickly identified his opportunity and made the move for the lead. Once in front, he controlled the race despite pressure from Deegan and the complications of heavy lapped traffic.
Hunter eventually stretched his advantage and crossed the line 5.6 seconds ahead of Deegan.

The performance was even more impressive considering Jett’s difficult opening lap. A poor start and first-turn contact dropped the championship contender deep into the field, forcing him into recovery mode.
Jett fought his way back to fifth.
That comeback kept the damage manageable.
A Second Moto That Changed Everything
Moto 2 gave Hunter the cleaner conditions he needed.

The Honda rider grabbed the holeshot and immediately went to work, opening a 3.4-second advantage over Jorge Prado after the opening lap.
Prado applied pressure, but Hunter refused to give up control.
Behind them, Jett was once again forced to fight forward after starting outside the lead group. His charge eventually took him past Prado on the final lap, securing second and limiting the championship damage.

Out front, Hunter completed a wire-to-wire victory.
Six overall wins this season, six 1-1 performances and a championship lead heading into the final round.
For Hunter, however, the result wasn’t just about points.
“I haven’t felt great all week [physically], so it feels great to get this done,” .
he said
That admission adds another layer to an already intense weekend. Rather than chasing the championship with desperation, Hunter focused on executing his own race.
One Point Separates the Brothers
The Budds Creek result created an extraordinary championship scenario.
Hunter now leads with 442 points, while Jett sits directly behind him on 441.

The lead has changed hands between the brothers six times this summer.
Jett’s fourth-place overall result was only his third non-podium finish in 37 premier-class starts that wasn’t caused by a crash or penalty. Yet the bigger story is what comes next.

The championship finale is effectively winner-take-all.
Jett knows exactly where he needs to improve.
“I need to get better on the starts; those have been terrible.”
With the championship separated by a single point, that weakness could become decisive.
Chance Hymas Breaks Through in 250SMX
The 250SMX championship picture also shifted dramatically at Budds Creek.

Chance Hymas delivered a 2-1 moto score to claim his third career overall victory and become the seventh different 250SMX winner of the summer.
That level of parity has now set a new record for different winners in a single season.

Hymas had to work for it. After finishing second in Moto 1, he delivered a wire-to-wire performance in Moto 2 and resisted late pressure from Levi Kitchen.
“It feels amazing to get back to this point.”
For Hymas, the victory was a reminder of what perseverance can produce after the setbacks of a difficult season.
Davies Takes Control of the Championship
While Hymas celebrated, Cole Davies quietly produced one of the most important rides of the weekend.

His 1-3 moto score secured second overall and moved him back to the top of the 250SMX standings.
Davies now leads Kitchen by 14 points heading into the final round.

Landen Gordon also delivered a breakthrough, taking third overall for the first podium of his career.
The rookie’s result added another chapter to a season defined by unpredictability.
Ironman Is Next
The 2026 Pro Motocross Championship now heads to Indiana’s Ironman Raceway on August 29 for the final round of the regular season.
Three championships will be decided.
In the premier class, Hunter and Jett Lawrence are separated by one point.
In the 250SMX class, Davies has a 14-point cushion over Kitchen.
After the chaos of Budds Creek, there is only one question left:
Who handles the pressure when everything is on the line?
