Team South Africa is heading to France with a three-rider squad built around momentum, experience and one of the country’s biggest international opportunities in years.
The nation has confirmed its line-up for the 2026 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN), with Camden McLellan, Tristan Purdon and Slade Smith set to carry the South African flag at the legendary Ernée circuit from 2–4 October 2026.
And while the world’s motocross heavyweights will arrive with star-studded line-ups, South Africa has a clear target: fight its way into the top 10.
McLellan Arrives With Serious Momentum
If there is one rider capable of giving the South African effort extra firepower, it is Camden McLellan.
The MX2 contender heads to France after producing the strongest season of his career to date, including two Grand Prix victories and a genuine challenge for the MX2 World Championship.
That form changes the complexion of Team South Africa‘s campaign.
McLellan will compete in the MX2 class, bringing Grand Prix-winning speed and confidence into an event where starts, consistency and the ability to survive the pressure of three intense races can make or break a country’s overall result.
For South Africa, McLellan’s current form represents more than individual success — it could be the foundation of a serious team result.
Purdon Returns as Smith Completes the Trio
The 2026 squad features just one change from last year’s team, with Tristan Purdon coming into the line-up alongside McLellan and Slade Smith.
Purdon will represent South Africa in the MXGP class, while Smith takes on the MX Open category.
That class spread is crucial at the Motocross of Nations.
Unlike a conventional championship weekend, MXoN success is not about one rider winning. Every point matters, and every mistake can carry consequences for the entire national team.
The riders therefore need to balance outright pace with calculated racing, particularly when facing competitors accustomed to the unique pressure and unpredictability of the Nations format.

Can South Africa Crack the Top 10?
That is the question hanging over the campaign.
Breaking into the MXoN top 10 requires more than having one fast rider. South Africa will need strong starts, consistent finishes and the ability of all three riders to deliver when the pressure peaks.
Ernée will provide another major challenge.
The French venue is synonymous with motocross and will put the riders under the microscope in front of an enormous international crowd. The circuit, atmosphere and depth of the opposition will leave little room for error.
But this is also exactly the kind of stage where confidence can become a weapon.
McLellan’s breakthrough season gives the team a rider arriving with belief. Purdon and Smith will have their own roles to play, with the overall result depending on how effectively the three combine across the weekend.
Vlaanderen Switch Could Still Happen in 2027
There was also an attempt to bring Calvin Vlaanderen into the South African squad for 2026.
However, the FIM did not approve the sporting nationality change in time. Under the applicable rules, a change of sporting nationality can only be made at the start of the year.
That means the possibility of Vlaanderen representing South Africa could remain open for 2027, adding another intriguing storyline to the country’s future MXoN ambitions.
For now, though, the job belongs to McLellan, Purdon and Smith.
Backing the Flag in France
Team South Africa is encouraging supporters to get behind the squad in Ernée.
Fans can purchase the €230 Team South Africa ticket, which includes full event entry for the 2–4 October weekend as well as paddock access. More importantly, ticket purchases directly contribute towards the costs of getting the South African team to France.
The Motocross of Nations is one of motocross’s ultimate tests of national pride.
For Team South Africa, Ernée is an opportunity to measure itself against the best on the planet — and potentially prove that South African motocross belongs inside the world’s top 10.
Three riders. Three classes. One flag. The road to Ernée is officially on.
