South African esports talent Zaid April has secured the national Red Bull Wings Cup title at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, earning the opportunity to represent the country at the World Final in Miami in January 2027.
For competitive gamers, the difference between playing for enjoyment and competing at the highest level comes down to preparation, consistency and the ability to perform when the pressure is on. For Zaid April, those qualities came together at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, where he emerged as South Africa’s Red Bull Wings Cup champion.
Facing 15 of the country’s top EA SPORTS FC™ 27 players, April navigated the national final to claim the title and secure his place on the international stage. His victory marks an important moment in his competitive gaming journey, with Miami now firmly in his sights.

From Loftus Versfeld to the World Stage
The Red Bull Wings Cup South African National Final brought together 16 finalists who had earned their places through two competitive qualifying routes: the Open League and the University League.
The Open League gave players the opportunity to compete online through PlayStation Tournaments and FACEIT, while the University League brought the competition directly to campuses through organised activations.
Both pathways ultimately led to Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, where the finalists went head-to-head for the national championship.
For April, the result represents the payoff from progressing through those qualifying stages and delivering when it mattered most.
Winning a national championship is one achievement. Earning the right to represent an entire country takes the challenge somewhere else entirely.

The Mindset Behind the National Championship
Competitive EA SPORTS FC™ is about more than knowing how to move the ball, create attacking opportunities or find the back of the net. At this level, tactical awareness, decision-making and composure can separate players who compete from those who consistently find ways to win.
April’s victory came against a field of 15 other national finalists, each having fought through the qualifying system to reach the same destination.
Reflecting on his achievement, April highlighted the time, effort and passion that went into reaching the national title.
“Winning the national title is an incredible feeling, especially knowing how much time, effort and passion I’ve put into getting here,” .
says April
He also acknowledged the significance of the opportunity ahead, describing the chance to represent South Africa internationally as an honour.
“I’m incredibly honoured to have the opportunity to represent South Africa on the international stage in Miami.”
That opportunity is now the next chapter in a journey that has taken him from online qualifying competitions to a national final at one of South Africa‘s most recognisable sporting venues.

Red Bull Wings Cup: A Global Competition
The competition extends far beyond South Africa. The Red Bull Wings Cup is a global EA SPORTS FC™ 27 tournament spanning approximately 80 countries, bringing national champions together to compete for the inaugural world title.
The format also introduces an interesting dimension to the competition. At the World Final, players will need to demonstrate their football gaming ability while taking on real-world football challenges.
This creates a different test from the traditional esports tournament format, requiring competitors to step beyond the virtual pitch and engage with the physical side of the sport.
For South Africa, having a national champion in the international field provides an opportunity to showcase local gaming talent within a much larger global esports community.
It also highlights how competitive gaming continues to create opportunities for players to develop their skills, build competitive experience and potentially turn their passion into international sporting experiences.

Miami Is the Next Challenge for Zaid April
With the national title secured, April’s attention now shifts towards the Red Bull Wings Cup World Final in Miami, United States, in January 2027.
There, he will compete against national champions from around the world, each arriving with the ambition of claiming the inaugural global championship.
The challenge will demand preparation, adaptability and the ability to perform against unfamiliar opponents in a different competitive environment.
For April, however, the motivation is already clear: represent South Africa with pride and give everything he has on the international stage.
“To be able to represent South Africa is an incredible honour,” .
he says, adding that he is excited for the challenge and determined to make the country proud
From navigating the qualifying rounds to lifting the national title at Loftus Versfeld, April has already taken a significant step in his competitive gaming journey.
Now, South Africa’s champion heads to Miami with a national title behind him and a global opportunity ahead.
