BYD Expands SHARK 6 Line-Up with New 350 kW Performance Model
BYD Auto South Africa has expanded its SHARK 6 range with the introduction of the all-new BYD SHARK 6 Performance, a flagship plug-in hybrid bakkie that delivers more power, greater towing capability and enhanced technology for drivers seeking both everyday practicality and serious performance.
Joining the existing SHARK 6 Premium, the new Performance derivative raises the bar with a powerful 350 kW hybrid powertrain, 700 Nm of torque, and a 3,500 kg braked towing capacity, making it one of the most capable electrified bakkies available in South Africa.
At the heart of the SHARK 6 Performance is BYD’s latest DMO Super Hybrid system. The setup combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors to provide responsive all-wheel-drive performance.
The advanced hybrid system enables the bakkie to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds, while maintaining the versatility expected from a workhorse capable of towing boats, caravans, trailers and heavy equipment.
Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto South Africa, says the SHARK 6 has already changed customer expectations within the competitive bakkie segment by combining plug-in hybrid efficiency with strong performance and everyday usability.
He adds that the new Performance model builds on that success by offering increased power, enhanced towing capability and additional technology, while the SHARK 6 Premium continues to provide customers with an excellent alternative depending on their needs and budget.
Efficient Plug-in Hybrid Driving
The SHARK 6 Performance is equipped with a 29.58 kWh battery, allowing for an electric-only driving range of up to 80 km. Combined with a full 60-litre fuel tank, the vehicle delivers a WLTP driving range of up to 640 km.
This allows drivers to complete many daily commutes using electric power alone while retaining the flexibility of the petrol engine for longer journeys and towing duties.
Charging is equally convenient, with AC charging of approximately 7 kW providing a full charge in around four hours, while DC fast charging of up to 55 kW can recharge the battery in approximately 35 minutes under suitable conditions.
Built for Work and Adventure
Like the SHARK 6 Premium, the new Performance model features BYD’s Dual Mode Off-Road (DMO) all-wheel-drive system, ensuring excellent traction across a variety of surfaces.
Exclusive to the Performance model is Crawl Mode, which automatically manages speed, braking and power delivery during challenging low-speed off-road driving. This makes navigating rocks, mud, sand and steep inclines significantly easier.
With 230 mm of ground clearance, rugged 18-inch wheels and intelligent all-wheel drive, the SHARK 6 Performance is equally suited to demanding job sites, outdoor adventures and family road trips.
Its practicality is further enhanced by Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, allowing users to power appliances directly from the vehicle. Whether operating portable fridges, lighting, coffee machines or work equipment, the SHARK 6 transforms into a mobile power source wherever it’s needed.
Premium Cabin with Advanced Connectivity
Inside, the SHARK 6 Performance offers a spacious and technology-focused interior with several upgrades unique to the flagship model.
A new column-mounted gear selector frees up space within the centre console, while a large 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen takes centre stage. Electrically adjustable front seats and a host of premium comfort features further enhance the driving experience.
Google Automotive Services are fully integrated, giving drivers built-in Google Maps navigation and access to selected applications through the Google Play Store, reducing the need to rely on smartphone connectivity.

The SHARK 6 range now consists of two plug-in hybrid models—the Premium and the new Performance.
While both share BYD’s advanced electrified technology, premium cabin and intelligent all-wheel-drive capability, the Performance model distinguishes itself with its turbocharged engine, higher power output, increased towing capacity and additional technology features.

The BYD SHARK 6 Performance is available to order from BYD dealerships across South Africa with a recommended retail price of R1,149,900.
