B-Boy Barshie Wins Red Bull BC One Johannesburg Cypher

3 Mins read

The road to the Red Bull BC One World Final in Toronto officially kicked off in Johannesburg, with B-Boy Barshie and B-Girl Baylie emerging victorious at the Red Bull BC One Cypher Johannesburg held at Urban Playground Fourways on Sunday.

As the world’s most prestigious one-on-one breaking competition, Red Bull BC One once again showcased South Africa’s incredible breaking talent, with dancers battling head-to-head in front of judges who scored each performance on technique, originality, creativity, musicality and overall performance.

Barshie Books His National Final Spot

Representing CreatorBeast Crew and Artistic Intelligence, B-Boy Barshie secured the Johannesburg title after an impressive day of battles, earning his place at the Red Bull BC One South Africa National Final in Cape Town on 6 September 2026.

For the experienced breaker, the victory was especially meaningful after years of representing the local scene.

“You don’t really have a lot of competitions like this in South Africa, so this was really good,”.

Barshie said after his victory

Although balancing a demanding schedule leading up to the event, Barshie believed his preparation paid off.

“I did prepare for it. I wasn’t the cleanest, but I was the best out of the bunch.”

He also praised Red Bull for continuing to invest in South African breaking.

“Props to Red Bull for hosting this event because these kids need that. They need to see it.”

Proudly representing Johannesburg and the East Rand, the 34-year-old says age is no obstacle.

“I’m technically an OG, but I’m not old. I’m only 34. I’m not letting these two Ks take me out yet.”

With his place in the National Final secured, Barshie’s focus now shifts to training even harder as he prepares to compete for the opportunity to represent South Africa on the world stage.

Baylie Battles Through the Field

B-Girl Baylie claimed the women’s title after taking on an all-male field throughout the Johannesburg qualifier.

Rather than seeing the challenge as a disadvantage, she embraced every battle as valuable preparation for September’s National Final.

“It felt necessary to do it. The breaking scene is always changing, so I want to stay in it as much as I can.”

Competing against the B-Boys helped sharpen both her endurance and power.

“It teaches you a lot. It pushes my stamina and my power. That helps a lot and prepares me for what I have to get ready for.”

Baylie admitted every battle teaches valuable lessons, with confidence becoming one of her biggest takeaways from Johannesburg.

“I learned that I have to keep my composure and trust myself.”

Looking ahead, she’s determined to elevate every aspect of her performance.

“I’m definitely going to focus on my power and my mindset. I just want to believe in myself, wake up early, get to bed late and put the hours in.”

She added that the event reignited her motivation after a demanding year.

“Now I have some motivation again to get back into it stronger than I have done it ever before. I’m excited for the finals.”

The Road to Cape Town and Toronto

Johannesburg marked the first stop in the three-city qualification series for the 2026 Red Bull BC One season.

The stakes become even higher at the National Final, with the winning B-Boy and B-Girl earning the honour of representing South Africa at the Red Bull BC One World Final in Toronto, Canada, on 29 November 2026, where they’ll compete against the world’s best breakers for the prestigious world title.
