A$AP Rocky x PUMA Straycat Brings Rally Grit

2 Mins read

A$AP Rocky and PUMA are taking motorsport-inspired footwear off the track and onto the streets with the brand-new A$AP Rocky x PUMA Straycat.

Landing on 27 August, the new silhouette digs into PUMA’s archive for its inspiration, reviving the rugged DNA of the 2005 Ouninpohja Explorador II and rebuilding it for a generation that sees performance design as part of everyday street culture.

The result is less polished racing shoe and more hard-edged trail machine—with enough attitude to make its presence felt far beyond the paddock.

From Rally Archive to Street Weapon

The Straycat starts with a silhouette that already carried serious outdoor and motorsport credentials.

The 2005 Ouninpohja Explorador II was defined by rugged construction, aggressive wrap-up soles and a distinctive tire-tread aesthetic. Those details were rooted in rally racing, where grip, durability and control are non-negotiable.

A$AP Rocky, PUMA’s Creative Director for more than three years, found the archived design during one of his regular visits to the brand’s historical collection.

Rather than simply reproduce it, Rocky used the original as a platform for reinvention.

“I wanted to rename the shoe Straycat. The name captures the spirit of the outlier, built for rugged terrain racing, now living on the streets.”

said A$AP Rocky

That idea is central to the shoe. It is designed to look like it belongs somewhere between a rally stage, a rough trail and a city pavement.

Grip Gets the Rocky Treatment

The most obvious technical upgrade comes underneath the foot.

The Straycat introduces a Vibram-enhanced compound rubber outsole, complete with tire-inspired traction. The collaboration also marks what is described as Vibram’s first true co-branded outsole, featuring a cat positioned near the toe.

For a shoe drawing heavily from rally culture, the aggressive tread is more than decoration. It reinforces the visual connection to tires and off-road terrain while giving the silhouette a distinctly technical footprint.

The outsole works alongside rugged material choices and a wrap-up construction that makes the shoe appear ready to attack uneven surfaces.

Built Like an Outlier

Rocky has also pushed the Straycat’s construction away from conventional sneaker formulas.

Hand-distressed materials give the shoe a weathered, lived-in character, while a unique double-lacing configuration adds another layer of visual and functional detail.

The result is intentionally imperfect.

Instead of chasing the pristine finish associated with performance footwear, the Straycat embraces abrasion, texture and mechanical-looking details. It feels closer to equipment that has already seen some action than a sneaker waiting for its first outing.

That approach fits Rocky’s broader creative direction at PUMA: take something familiar, dig into its history and then distort it enough to make it feel new again.

From Stage to the Streets

The Straycat has already appeared on stage during A$AP Rocky’s latest US Tour, giving the silhouette an early life outside conventional footwear launches.

Now the wider release brings the design into the streetwear conversation.

The collection extends beyond the shoe with an A$AP Rocky x PUMA T7 Panel Jersey, Fire Gloves and Oil Can Bag, building a broader visual language around motorsport, utility and Rocky’s distinctive approach to fashion.

For action-sports fans, the appeal is straightforward: the Straycat takes familiar cues from rally and trail equipment and translates them into something designed for urban movement.

Release Details

The A$AP Rocky x PUMA Straycat launches on 27 August through PUMA.com, Shelflife and Al Capone.

It is a release that demonstrates how deeply motorsport continues to influence contemporary streetwear. But rather than simply borrowing racing graphics or branding, Rocky has gone back to the construction language itself—traction, rugged materials, aggressive geometry and terrain-ready detailing.

A 2005 PUMA trail icon has been rebuilt for the streets—and the Straycat is ready to run.
