KDC Cape Town Crowns Its GrandSlam Winners

2 Mins read

Eyethu Skate Park brought the heat as the Kimberley Diamond Cup (KDC) GrandSlam rolled into Cape Town, delivering a day of skateboarding, community and serious competitive energy.

The weather played its part, but it was the riders and fans who truly turned up the temperature.

From young guns taking their first steps in competitive skateboarding to seasoned competitors battling for Championship qualification, Cape Town delivered a showcase of the depth and diversity of South Africa‘s skateboarding scene.

With athletes as young as five years old taking part, the event offered a clear glimpse of where the sport is heading.

The Young Guns Make Their Mark

The Under-16 divisions produced some of the day’s standout performances.

In the Girls Under 16 division, Sofia claimed the top spot, followed by Karina in second and Alba in third. Georgia and Erin completed the top five, while Sofia also secured the Best Trick award.

The Boys Under 16 category saw Azola take the win, with Felix finishing second and Legal third. Travis and York rounded out the top five.

Felix also took home the Best Trick award.

For these younger competitors, however, the significance of the event goes beyond the leaderboard.

Azola’s mother, Refilwe, explained what competitions such as the KDC mean for her son.

“KDC competition makes a very huge difference for my son, specifically because it puts him out there and a lot of brands can see him and notice him for tomorrow.”

That exposure is increasingly important in a sport where young riders are building their profiles long before reaching senior competition.

Cape Town’s Women Bring the Heat

The Ladies Open competition produced another strong showing, with Bronwyn claiming first place.

Janine finished second, while BeXx took third. Osego and Clarice completed the top five.

BeXx also added the Best Trick award to her performance, underlining the level of technical ability on display throughout the division.

The competitive depth across the women’s field is another positive sign for the development of skateboarding in South Africa, with events like KDC providing valuable opportunities for female riders to compete, gain exposure and push their progression.

Thalente Leads the Men’s Open

The Men’s Open division delivered plenty of action, with Thalente taking the victory.

Alex finished second, followed by Ethan in third, Tyree’s in fourth and Musab in fifth.

Alex also claimed Best Trick, adding another highlight to a fiercely contested division.

With the top three riders earning their place at the Championship, every position mattered.

More Than Just a Skate Competition

One of the biggest stories from Eyethu Skate Park was the atmosphere created away from the leaderboard.

Skateboarding is built around community, and Cape Town‘s parents, coaches and supporters made their presence felt throughout the day.

For young riders, having family members in their corner can be the difference between simply entering a competition and believing they belong there.

Refilwe’s passionate support for Azola captured that perfectly, with her calls of “Let’s go! Let’s get it!” reflecting the energy coming from the sidelines.

That support system matters.

Behind every young skater landing a trick in competition is often a parent handling transport, equipment, schedules, nerves and everything else that makes competition possible.

Kimberley Awaits

The Cape Town GrandSlam also carried major Championship implications.

The top three riders in each category have qualified for the KDC Championship in Kimberley on 5 December 2026.

That means the next chapter is already set.

Cape Town showed that the KDC is not simply producing competition winners. It is creating opportunities for young riders to gain experience, giving established skaters a platform to compete and bringing communities together around a sport that continues to grow.

With the Championship now on the horizon, the riders who made the cut have one more major opportunity to prove themselves.

Cape Town understood the assignment. Kimberley is next.
