Red Bull Wings Cup Opens SA Route to Miami

September 29 – November 1

South African EA SPORTS FC 27 players are getting a new route from the console to an international stage, with the Red Bull Wings Cup landing in Mzansi from 29 September to 1 November 2026.

The competition arrives at an interesting moment for football and gaming. EA SPORTS FC 27 officially launches globally on 25 September, putting the new title in players’ hands just days before the South African qualifiers begin.

For local competitors, the stakes go beyond bragging rights. The national champion will earn a place at the Red Bull Wings Cup World Final in Miami, expected in January 2027.

Two Routes, One National Final

The South African competition is split into two leagues designed to give players different ways into the tournament.

The Open League takes the action online through PlayStation Tournaments, with players competing in Ultimate Team 1v1 matches inside 32-player brackets.

Once a bracket fills, another is automatically generated, giving more players opportunities to enter the competition.

Bracket winners then progress to a closed qualifier hosted on FACEIT, where a single-elimination knockout will reduce the field to the country’s top six players.

There will also be two Wildcard qualifier spots, creating another route into the National Final.

The second pathway takes competition directly onto university campuses.

Campus Competition Goes Rush Mode

The University League brings players together in person, with students competing in seven-minute Rush matches during campus activations.

Instead of a traditional knockout structure, results feed into a live national leaderboard monitored by student marketeers on the ground.

At the end of the qualifying period, the top eight university players will earn their place at the National Final.

That means 16 competitors will ultimately converge in Pretoria: six from the Open League, two Wildcard qualifiers and eight university players.

Loftus Versfeld Becomes the Battlefield

The South African National Final takes place on 1 November at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

It gives the tournament a physical setting closely connected to the country’s football culture, while putting competitive gaming inside one of South Africa‘s recognised sporting venues.

For the players who make it that far, the format changes again. Winning nationally means moving from the South African competitive scene to an international final in Miami.

And the global stage will not rely solely on controller skills.

From Controller to Physical Football

At the expected January 2027 World Final, national champions from 80 countries will combine their EA SPORTS FC skills with real-world football challenges.

That creates a different test from the standard esports setup.

Players will need to transition between virtual decision-making and physical football challenges, reinforcing the competition’s central idea: the skills required to understand football can exist on both sides of the screen.

The concept also gives South African players a chance to represent the country’s gaming community internationally.

Competitive EA FC player and 2023 SAFA eCup champion Zaid April, who represents Goliath Gaming, sees the timing as an opportunity to tap into the energy surrounding football.

“In a World Cup year, the football energy is already huge, so bringing that into the Red Bull Wings Cup is going to be special.”

April also highlighted the arrival of FC 27 and the challenge of competing against the country’s strongest players.

Comic Con Africa Gets the First Drop

Before the official competition window opens, Red Bull Wings Cup will make a public appearance at Comic Con Africa from 24–27 September at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec.

Fans will be able to pick up a controller and experience the competition environment themselves.

There is also an in-game incentive attached to selected limited-edition Red Bull cans. Players can scan the QR code and redeem the unique code under the tab for 250 EA SPORTS FC 27 Season Points, an exclusive Red Bull Wings Cup Ultimate Team Kit and a Red Bull Wings Cup Loan Player item.

With FC 27 launching on 25 September, the timing puts the tournament directly into the opening days of the new game’s competitive cycle.

The Road Ahead

For South African EA FC players, the equation is straightforward: enter locally, survive the qualifiers, win at Loftus Versfeld and earn the opportunity to test themselves against international champions in Miami.

But before that global stage, 16 players must first separate themselves from the rest of Mzansi’s competitive FC 27 field.

The Red Bull Wings Cup South Africa competition runs from 29 September to 1 November 2026, with the National Final taking place at Loftus Versfeld.
