The fifteenth edition of the Simola Hillclimb in Knysna delivered both triumph and tragedy in equal measure, marking a historic yet somber milestone in South Africa’s premier motorsport event. While the weekend was meant to celebrate speed and innovation, it was marred by the event’s first-ever fatality—the untimely passing of beloved competitor Pieter Joubert.

Despite the heartbreak, Joubert’s brothers, Charl and Dawie, made the courageous decision to withdraw from the event but urged that the show must go on. Their sentiment was echoed across the motorsport community, who rallied together in a moving display of unity and remembrance. Spectators remained until the end, transforming the weekend into a heartfelt tribute that blended mourning with the adrenaline-fueled excitement that defines Simola.

As the engines roared on Sunday afternoon, history was made. Multiple longstanding records tumbled, culminating in Pieter Zeelie’s dominant performance that earned him the title of King of the Hill. Among the standout drivers was Reggie Roets from BB Motorsport, who clinched second place in the Modified Saloon Car category, finishing just 1.280 seconds behind Zeelie. Piloting the formidable Motul-powered Nissan GTR R35 nicknamed ‘Armageddon’, Roets praised his team’s effort and dedicated the result to the memory of Joubert.
“It was bittersweet unfortunately with the passing of friend and well-known competitor Pieter Joubert, but we decided to continue racing in his honour. Our trusty GTR performed flawlessly all weekend, and we will massage even more speed from her for next year’s edition.”
said Roets
Other Motul-backed participants included the Border Towing Team from East London, Jared Roussow, Andre and Jeandre Bezuidenhout, the VW Motorsport team, Piet Potgieter, and Clinton Laurens. Past record-holder Franco Scribante finished fourth, while Johan Kristofferson set a new EV record, becoming one of only four drivers to break the 40-second barrier.
“We were devastated by the loss of Pieter Joubert and deeply moved by how the Simola community supported his family and teammates. It’s the ultimate example of the spirit of Simola at work. We are proud to have supported so many outstanding competitors through every high and low.”
Motul’s General Manager for Southern and Eastern Africa, Mercia Jansen, reflected on the emotional weekend:
The 2025 Simola Hillclimb not only pushed the limits of performance but also exemplified the resilience and solidarity of South African motorsport. It was a weekend where legends were made, records were shattered, and the memory of a fallen racer was honoured with the roar of engines and the beating heart of a united community.
