BYD Marks Milestone Year in South Africa as Momentum Accelerates in 2025
BYD, the world’s leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles (NEVs), is celebrating a landmark year in South Africa, marking 2025 as its most successful period since entering the local market in 2023. Defined by steady commercial growth, an expanding national footprint, and the launch of innovative electric and hybrid models, the year signals BYD’s growing influence in South Africa’s evolving automotive landscape.

Central to this success were the local debuts of the BYD Dolphin Surf and the Sealion 5, two vehicles that captured widespread attention and underscored the brand’s commitment to accessible and sustainable mobility. The Dolphin Surf made headlines as South Africa’s most affordable electric vehicle, offering eco-friendly urban commuting at a price point designed to bring EV ownership within reach of more consumers. Meanwhile, the Sealion 5, a plug-in hybrid SUV combining advanced technology with premium comfort, introduced a compelling option for families seeking sustainable versatility without compromise.

Notably, South Africa became the first market globally to launch the Sealion 5, highlighting BYD’s confidence in the local market and its strategic importance within the brand’s global expansion plans. The positive reception of both models reflects a growing appetite among South African consumers for practical, future-focused mobility solutions.
“This year has been a pivotal year for BYD in South Africa, marked by innovative launches like the Dolphin Surf and Sealion 5 that have resonated deeply with local consumers seeking affordable, sustainable mobility. Our growth reflects the trust South Africans have placed in us, and we’re excited to build on this momentum by making NEVs an everyday reality for more families and businesses.”
said Nomonde Kweyi, Marketing Director at BYD Auto South Africa
Beyond product innovation, BYD has made significant strides in expanding its local presence. In 2025, the company grew its dealer network to 18 locations nationwide, with plans to reach 30 dealerships by the end of the first quarter of 2026. This expansion ensures greater accessibility and support for customers across the country.

Complementing this growth is a major infrastructure investment, with BYD rolling out between 200 and 300 charging stations nationwide. This initiative strengthens South Africa’s NEV ecosystem, easing range anxiety and making electric driving more practical for both city commuters and long-distance travellers. The move reinforces BYD’s leadership in advancing new energy solutions while supporting a greener automotive sector.
“Since 2023, we have seen steady and significant growth from both a brand and commercial perspective. Our commitment to South Africa is long-term, and as we look toward Q1 2026, we are preparing for more exciting launches and a further expanded dealer network to ensure that every South African has access to the world’s best new energy technology.”
added Steve Chang, Managing Director at BYD Auto South Africa
With strong momentum behind it, BYD shows no signs of slowing down. More vehicle launches are planned for early 2026, alongside continued expansion of dealerships and charging infrastructure. As South Africa’s electric vehicle market matures, BYD’s milestone year in 2025 firmly positions the brand at the forefront of the country’s shift towards cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable mobility.
