Coenen Twins Make MXGP History in Latvia

2 Mins read

The MXGP of Latvia delivered a landmark moment in motocross history as twin brothers Lucas and Sacha Coenen became the first twins ever to win Grand Prix events on the same day at the FIM Motocross World Championship round in Kegums.

Under sunny skies at Motocenter Zelta Zirgs, the Belgian brothers produced a flawless display for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, sweeping both the MXGP and MX2 classes and strengthening their championship campaigns in spectacular fashion.

Lucas Extends MXGP Championship Lead

Lucas Coenen was untouchable throughout the weekend, winning both MXGP races and leading virtually every lap. The championship leader secured a perfect 50-point haul and his 20th career Grand Prix victory.

The young Belgian held off strong challenges from Jeffrey Herlings and reigning world champion Romain Febvre, while technical issues once again hampered Herlings’ title ambitions. Febvre finished third overall, while Kay de Wolf delivered his best MXGP result to date with second overall for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.

The dominant performance allowed Lucas to extend his championship lead to 62 points heading into the mid-season break.

MXGP Overall Podium

  1. Lucas Coenen (KTM) – 50 pts
  2. Kay de Wolf (Husqvarna) – 42 pts
  3. Romain Febvre (Kawasaki) – 40 pts

Sacha Completes Family Fairytale

Not to be outdone by his brother, Sacha Coenen produced a perfect MX2 weekend. The Belgian claimed both Fox Holeshot Awards, won both races and never surrendered the lead.

His commanding performance marked his sixth career Grand Prix victory and third consecutive triumph at Kegums, a venue that continues to suit his aggressive riding style.

The result also increased his MX2 championship advantage to 37 points over Simon Längenfelder, who endured a difficult weekend that included a painful crash in race two.

MX2 Overall Podium

  1. Sacha Coenen (KTM) – 50 pts
  2. Camden McLellan (Triumph) – 42 pts
  3. Mathis Valin (Kawasaki) – 37 pts

McLellan Continues Podium Run

South Africa’s Camden McLellan delivered another impressive performance for Triumph Racing Factory Team, finishing second overall in MX2.

Despite struggling with starts throughout the weekend, McLellan showed exceptional race pace and determination. A dramatic last-lap pass on Latvia’s Karlis Reisulis in race two secured the runner-up spot overall and elevated the South African to fourth in the championship standings.

McLellan admitted that improving his starts remains the key to challenging Coenen for race victories, but his consistent podium form confirms he remains firmly in the title conversation.

Historic Day for Motocross

The Coenen brothers’ achievement is one of the most remarkable family milestones in motocross history. They became the first twins ever to win Grand Prix races on the same day and the first brothers to accomplish the feat since Sébastien and Christophe Pourcel achieved it in 2007.

With both riders holding championship leads and showing dominant form, the Belgian twins have firmly established themselves as the stars of the 2026 season.

The championship now heads to Montevarchi in Italy for round nine, where rivals will be hoping to halt the momentum of the unstoppable Coenen brothers.
