RED BULL BC ONE RETURNS TO SOUTH AFRICA: GLOBAL BREAKING ROYALTY DESCENDS ON THE STREETS AS THE ROAD TO TORONTO HEATS UP

4 Mins read

Nearly two decades after South Africa made Red Bull BC One history, the world’s most explosive breaking championship is bringing the heat back home.

In 2007, Soweto’s legendary Orlando Power Station became the stage for the Red Bull BC One World Final the first and, to date, only global final staged on African soil. Now, 19 years later, the culture comes full circle as some of breaking’s biggest names return to South Africa ahead of the Red Bull BC One South Africa National Final in Cape Town on 5 September.

And they’re not coming quietly.

Two-time Red Bull BC One World Champion Lilou of France is back on South African soil, joined by fellow international heavyweights Alvin of Colombia, Lee of the Netherlands and Djibril of Belgium. Bringing the local fire is South Africa’s own three-time national champion Courtnaé Paul, who will hit workshops and community sessions across the country before stepping back into the cypher to defend her B-Girl crown.

FROM SOWETO’S POWER STATION TO CAPE TOWN’S CYpher

This isn’t simply another stop on the Red Bull BC One calendar.

It’s a return to where history was made.

Lilou knows exactly what that means. The French B-Boy is one of only four breakers ever to capture the Red Bull BC One World Final twice, winning in 2005 and 2009. He also stood on the floor at the historic 2007 World Final in Soweto, making this return to South Africa a full-circle moment almost two decades in the making.

Joining him is Colombia’s Alvin, bringing a powerful combination of athleticism, musicality and Venezuelan breaking heritage through his connection with B-Boy Lil G.

The Netherlands’ Lee, representing the renowned The Ruggeds, arrives with serious credentials of his own. A 2022 World Final runner-up and competitor at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Lee brings elite international experience straight into South Africa’s breaking community.

Then there’s Belgium’s Djibril, whose unmistakable “diamond wrist” freezes have helped establish his identity on the global stage. After making his first World Final wildcard appearance in 2025, he’s back in the mix and ready to pass on the knowledge.

But this tour isn’t about flexing credentials.

It’s about passing it on.

THE ALL-STARS ARE COMING — AND THE CULTURE GETS TO LEARN

The Red Bull BC One All-Star Tour is bringing nearly six decades of combined breaking experience directly into South African studios, streets and community spaces.

For the country’s emerging B-Boys and B-Girls, this is a serious opportunity: train with world champions, exchange ideas, sharpen technique and absorb knowledge from breakers who have competed at the highest levels of the discipline.

And standing alongside the international All Stars is someone who knows exactly what it takes to conquer the South African stage.

Courtnaé Paul.

Three-time Red Bull BC One South Africa national champion, DJ, choreographer and one of the country’s leading B-Girls, Courtnaé will be present throughout the tour before putting her own title on the line.

The message is simple:

Learn from the legends. Then step into the cypher and become one.

FOUR STOPS. ONE CULTURE. ZERO ROOM FOR HALF-STEPPING.

The All-Star Tour hits four key moments across South Africa.

Johannesburg gets the first strike on 29 August, followed by East London on 2 September. Cape Town then takes centre stage with a community jam and exchange on 3 September, before the final workshop lands on 5 September, just hours before the National Final ignites the city.

This is breaking beyond the competition floor connecting generations, crews, cities and styles through movement, music and culture.

THE CIRCLE CLOSES IN CAPE TOWN

Then comes the main event.

On Saturday, 5 September, Cape Town becomes the battleground as South Africa’s best breakers collide at the Red Bull BC One South Africa National Final.

From 14:00 to 20:00, Thibault Square in the City Bowl becomes a national showcase of skill, style, musicality and raw breaking energy.

And the best part?

Entry is FREE. No ticket. No registration. Just pull up.

The finalists have earned their places through qualifying cyphers across East London, Cape Town and Johannesburg, producing a final field featuring four B-Girls and 16 B-Boys.

The prize isn’t just bragging rights.

The national champions earn the opportunity to represent South Africa on the world stage in Toronto.

SOUTH AFRICA’S B-GIRLS ARE READY TO THROW DOWN

Defending the women’s crown is Courtnaé, who enters the National Final carrying three national titles and serious international experience.

She has represented South Africa at Red Bull BC One World Finals in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, while successfully defending the national title back-to-back in 2024 and 2025.

Now she faces another hungry generation coming for the crown.

Courtnaé isn’t treating the defence as a victory lap.

“Every year this field gets deeper, and that’s exactly why I keep coming back. Defending a title never gets easier; it gets sharper. I want the B-Girls coming up behind me to see that this stage belongs to us too.”

That’s not a warning.

That’s an invitation.

16 B-BOYS. ONE CROWN.

The men’s division is stacked with breakers representing different cities, crews, styles and approaches to the game.

The 16 B-Boys heading into the National Final are:

Bashi
Swae V
Nanky
Killy
Ranks
Boeraks
Rhythm
Shady
Chillo
Vector
Seeflehx
Jayden
Tankee
Warren
Labster
Toufeeq

Sixteen contenders enter.

One walks away as South Africa’s national champion.

THE ROAD TO TORONTO STARTS HERE

The stakes extend far beyond Cape Town.

South Africa’s new national B-Boy and B-Girl champions will earn their tickets to the Red Bull BC One World Final, where the world’s elite breakers will converge at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Canada, on Sunday, 29 November 2026.

It will be a landmark moment for the competition the first Red Bull BC One World Final ever hosted in Canada.

For South Africa, the mission is clear:

Find the next champions. Raise the flag. Take the cypher to Toronto.

From the electricity of Soweto in 2007 to the streets of Cape Town in 2026, the story continues.

The floor is waiting.

The speakers are ready.

The breakers are locked in.

South Africa — your cypher is calling.

Nineteen years after Soweto hosted a piece of Red Bull BC One history, the culture is coming full circle, and Cape Town is about to become the next chapter.
