Rare SA Entry Into Winter Olympics’ Toughest Event

2 Mins read

South Africa’s presence at the Winter Olympic Games has always been rare, but in 2026, one athlete is redefining what representation and resilience look like on snow. After proudly leading Team South Africa into the Opening Ceremony, cross-country skier Matt C. Smith now prepares to compete in one of the most physically and mentally demanding endurance events on the Winter Olympic programme.

Nicknamed “The Snowbok,” Smith will line up at the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium in Val di Fiemme, Italy, with his next race scheduled for Friday, 13 February 2026. Cross-country skiing is widely regarded as among the toughest Olympic disciplines, requiring sustained cardiovascular intensity across long distances, high altitude, and unforgiving terrain.

Performance Meets Recovery

Central to Smith’s Olympic preparation is an unconventional partnership with Corona Cero, built around a Relaxation Clause—a contractual commitment that values intentional rest, mental clarity, and recovery alongside peak athletic output. Rooted in the brand’s Time Cero philosophy, the approach challenges the traditional “always-on” mindset often associated with elite sport and instead promotes balance as a foundation for performance.

Smith joins a select global group of Winter Olympians aligned with this philosophy, including Mark McMorris, Marie-Philip Poulin, Cassie Sharpe, Arianna Fontana, Suzanne Schulting, Ayumu Hirano, Lucas Pinheiro, and Katie Ormerod—athletes whose achievements span disciplines, nations, and Olympic podiums.

“When I started, I had no idea what I was getting into—I just knew I wanted to chase the wild dream of representing South Africa at the Winter Olympics. Coming from a country without much snow sports, many thought it was impossible, but that only motivated me more.

The journey has been full of challenges and unforgettable moments, and I’ve learned it’s not just about reaching the Olympics, it’s about inspiring others to dream big. Partnering with Corona feels natural because they celebrate enjoying the process, embracing the unexpected, and living boldly—exactly how I’ve approached every step of this ride.”

Reflecting on his journey, Smith shared:

A Landmark Moment for South African Winter Sport

Smith’s participation arrives during a milestone year for the country. Milano Cortina 2026 marks the largest Winter Olympic team South Africa has ever sent, with five athletes competing across multiple disciplines. Alongside Smith are:

  • Nicole Burger – Skeleton
  • Malica Malherbe – Freestyle Skiing
  • Lara Markthaler – Slalom & Giant Slalom
  • Thomas Weir – Slalom & Giant Slalom

Together, they represent a growing ambition for South Africa within winter sport—an arena historically defined by geography, resources, and climate limitations.

“Matt’s journey reflects a more modern understanding of performance,” .

says Melanie Nicholson, Head of Brand: Corona South Africa

“It’s about clarity, sustainability, and knowing when to pause as much as when to push forward. That balance is what Corona Cero stands for, and why this partnership feels so authentic.”

Why This Moment Matters

Smith’s Olympic appearance is about more than a single race. It symbolises possibility beyond limitation, showing that athletes from non-traditional winter sport nations can compete on the world’s toughest stages. His story blends endurance with mindfulness, ambition with recovery—pointing toward a future where elite performance is measured not only by speed and strength, but also by sustainability and wellbeing.

As attention turns to Val di Fiemme on 13 February 2026, South Africa watches a rare but powerful moment unfold—one that could inspire the next generation to dream far beyond the country’s sunny skies and into the snow-covered trails of Olympic history.
