National Cross Country Championship – Round 5 – Carousel

The 2025 National Cross Country Championship reached a spectacular conclusion this past weekend at The Carousel in the North West, where South Africa’s top teams delivered elite performances to close off a season of passion, grit, and racing excellence.

KTM Dominate in Powerful Final Round

The Brother Leader Tread KTM outfit wrapped up the year in breathtaking style, with Scott Heygate, Matthew Wilson, and Kerim Fitz-Gerald all storming to victory in their classes. Matthew and Kerim secured not only race wins, but also their championship titles, adding to a season KTM can be immensely proud of.

KTM also clinched the National Cross Country Manufacturer’s Championship, confirming a campaign defined by consistency, focus, and unrivalled strength.

Scott Heygate led the charge with a composed and authoritative ride. Reflecting on the final outing, he shared:

“It was the perfect way to close out the season. My bike felt incredible from the start, and the team had everything dialled in. Huge thanks to the Brother Leader Tread KTM crew for the support throughout the year – ending the season with a win feels unreal.”

For Matthew Wilson, the final round was the cherry on top of a sensational year:

“The final round was an absolute blast! Everything came together, and the rain just made it even more exciting. Thank you to everyone for such an amazing season – I’m looking forward to a great 2026!”

Kerim Fitz-Gerald rounded out the season in dominant fashion, sealing his championship title with another polished performance. He praised the unity and hard work behind the scenes:

“The team has been unbelievable all season. I’m proud to bring the title home for KTM and extremely grateful for everyone who makes days like this possible.”

Team Manager Fitz-Gerald applauded the all-round commitment:

“Every rider and every mechanic played a part in this achievement. To walk away with wins, championships, and the Manufacturer’s Title is huge. This success belongs to the entire team and our fantastic supporters.”

This ends a powerhouse season for KTM – a campaign built on performance, teamwork, and unwavering spirit.

Husqvarna Racing Deliver a Proud Finish

Husqvarna Racing also closed the season on a high, with Davin Cocker and Luke Walker securing second-place finishes in their classes to cap off an impressive season.

The weekend was especially monumental for Davin Cocker, who claimed both the Open Class Championship and the Overall National Cross Country Championship, highlighting his consistency and speed across the year.

Reflecting on his season milestone, Davin expressed:

“I focused on riding smart and clean. The team had my bike dialled in, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together.”

Luke Walker engaged in a fierce back-and-forth battle with Matthew Wilson:

“That was proper racing from start to finish. I’m happy to end the season on the podium. Thanks to the team and my family for all the support.”

Team Manager Kerim Fitz-Gerald praised the squad:

“Davin and Luke closed the season exactly the way we wanted. This is the reward for the hard work the whole team put in, round after round.”

Husqvarna ends the campaign filled with pride and optimism for the seasons ahead.

Yamaha Celebrate Championship Glory

Everest Wealth Ridgeway Yamaha Racing—with partners Tork Craft and Dunlop—marked a triumphant return to national competition, clinching three national Junior Championships, podium finishes, and a hard-fought overall third at the final event.

Team Manager Harry Grobler praised the squad:

“Congratulations to our champions Murray, Ruald, and Ryan, who all won on the day. Our riders and staff delivered an exceptional season, and we look forward to even more success in 2026.”

Standout performances included:

  • Murray Smith – National High School Champion, winning four of five races.
  • Ruald Potgieter – 85cc Seniors Champion, matching Murray’s four-win season.
  • Ryan Wichman – 65cc Junior Champion, completing the year unbeaten.
  • Maddy Malan, who fought back from a broken handlebar early in the race to charge to a remarkable third overall.
  • Warrick van Schalkwyk, delivering a strong second in Masters.
  • Gerhard Vorster and Tyron Beverley producing competitive finishes in Seniors and OR3 respectively.

Returning after several years away, Yamaha’s comeback campaign was nothing short of dominant.

A Season to Remember

Round 5 at The Carousel offered everything cross country racing is known for—speed, grit, mud, emotion, and unforgettable battles.

With KTM, Husqvarna, and Yamaha all celebrating major achievements, the 2025 season ends with pride, progress, and excitement for what’s ahead.

As preparations for 2026 begin, one thing is certain:
South African Cross Country Racing has never looked stronger.
